A Brief History of Bingo
by
stickystebee-16825BINGO A classic game dating all the way back to 1530 in Italy. Where it was called “lo giuoco del Lotto D’italia”. In the 1770s the game made its way to France, where they called it Le Lotto. In the 1800’s the Germans started using a version of Bingo to teach their children math and spelling. Americans wouldn’t play Bingo until 1929. But even then it wasn’t “BINGO” …….yet. It was called Beano and was first played at a carnival in Atlanta, Georgia. We would probably still be playing Beano, had it not been for a toy salesman named Edwin S. Lowe. He overheard someone call out BINGO!! By mistake. So with the hired help of a math professor Carl Leffler, they created the game that we now call Bingo. But it really became popular when churches started having BINGO fund raisers. Today it is estimated that more than $90 million each week is spent on Bingo in the US alone.
That’s the story of “
Bingo
” a game played and loved by all ages all over the world.
