Recycling has become more and more prominent nowadays with all the social outcry towards waste generation and its adverse effects on the environment. Unfortunately – the amounts of recycled waste is not nearly enough to even consider full green future for our planet. Not every country is working towards increasing its recycle rate – mostly because there are usually more pressing matters that need to be addressed. That does not mean, however, that recycling is not important. The importance of the 3 Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle is becoming more and more needed and thus needs to be implemented as much as possible.

One of the biggest offenders, in terms of direct impact, is plastic. Most (if not all) types of plastic do not disintegrate naturally. If they do – it takes over a hundred years for the process to complete in a natural way. During that period there are number of adverse effects on the environment – animals might swallow some of the plastic leading to suffocation and health problems, if the plastic contains any kind of colouring it might leak into the soil on which the plastic is situated and contaminate the soil beneath it and general disturbance can be caused by the presence of the plastic.

There are about 50 types of plastic. The main types are:

HDPE – Opaque plastic bottles.

PVC – Transparent, with a seam running across the base.

PET – Transparent, with a hard spot on the base of the bottle.

Each of those types of plastic (which we commonly use everyday) are not biodegradable and persist in nature for hundred of years.

The beforementioned types of plastic are, indeed, recyclable. There are, however, a few things that must be taken into consideration in order for the recycling process to go smoothly.

If you need to buy plastic – buy in bulk in order to save some packaging from buying fewer at a time.

Inform yourself on your local plastic collection points. In the UK there are many collection areas which makes disposing responsibly much easier than before.

When you collect all the plastic that you intend to give away for recycling – be sure that the plastic is mostly clean and doesnt contain very much liquid, food, dirt etc. This makes it less likely for the processed plastic to be branded as contaminated and eventually end up in a landfill thus wasting money and resources and actually being more detrimental to nature.

Look out for RVMs (Reverse Vending Machines) – theyre becoming more and more widespread in the UK and provide an excellent opportunity to dispose of any plastic you might have on you and need to dispose of quickly. They use advanced AI to collect, recognize and sort any plastic bottles and cups provided to them. They have been used in Europe for several years with great success. When you put any plastic bottle or cup you help the environment and even get paid for it – the machine will pay you for providing the plastic! The company which provides those vending machines, Reverse Vending Corporation hopes to have 300 RVMs operating in schools, shops and offices to make plastic recycling easier and more prominent in our life.
